GCORR Monitoring Training 2011

Toward a Ministry of Presence

Joint CORR/CSRW Training Event Equips Leaders with Monitoring Resources

The General Commission on Religion and Race and the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women hosted their first ever joint training for CORR and COSROW chairs last month in Houston, Texas. Fourty-seven CORR chairs and eight COSROW representatives attended the event Feb. 17-19. Participants were introduced to new monitoring tools, logic model concepts, and two GCORR campaigns—Drop the I-Word and Call to CORR{age}!*

Giovanni Arroyo

The majority of the three-day training focused on effective methods of monitoring and instruction on how to use the new monitoring tools through dialogue facilitated by Giovanni Arroyo, Team Leader, Monitoring and Advocacy and Elaine Moy, Assistant General Secretary for Finance and Administration, GCSRW.

Day 2 of the training, Moy told the group, “Each one of us are leaders in our church. Every one sitting in this room is a leader of our denomination by virtue that you are here.” By unpacking the “ -isms” when we monitor and being intentional about our monitoring, we can begin to seek change. “For change to happen, there need to be relationships [in monitoring],” said Moy.

Elaine Moy

Day 3 of the training, Arroyo spoke on the topic of racial equity at general and jurisdictional conference and advised participants to invite people to be self-aware of what it means to be a delegate. He stressed that the importance of assuring racial equity at these levels is not only to focus on representation but on process as well. The Equity Impact Assessment tool is one thing that could help CORR members in this process. The tool was designed to “help address the root causes of inequities not just their manifestations,” said Arroyo. When assessing the racial equity at various conference levels, monitors should have the ability to not only point out what’s wrong but offer suggestions of how we can fix it. “We need to be proactive in this process.”

*Drop the I-Word is a national campaign aimed at eliminating the term “illegals” from church and community dialogue. Call to CORR{age}! is aimed at increasing racial ethnic representation at General Conference 2012 and is designed to support caucus and CORR leaders in creating partnerships with other groups to address racial equity concerns.

Delegate Selection for General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference

Annual conference members will be nominating and electing delegates to represent the annual conference at the General Conference and Jurisdictional Conference. These delegates are the people who will determine, through a voting process, the official policies and practices of the United Methodist Church. In order to identify the best candidates for this election, consider creating probing questions for those who would like to be or considering running for a delegate position of your annual conference.
