The Rev. Myungim Kim
The Rev. Myungim Kim is the Director of Annual Conference Relations of the General Commission on Religion and Race. She is the primary liaison between the General Commission on Religion and Race and Annual Conference leadership. She travels to conferences throughout the UM Connection to interpret and promote collaboration and partnership with the work of the General Commission on Religion and Race. She also provides resources and supports conference leadership. Myungim was inspired by her mother’s prayer life. When she was younger, she often found her mother praying on her knees in the kitchen during the middle of the night. Myungim asked her mother what she was praying for, and her mother answered that she was praying for her children. It touched Myungim’s heart deeply, so she told her mother that she wanted to become a mother who prays for her children every day. Myungim’s mother replied, “I do not want you to live like me. I want you to become a person who prays not only for her children but for more people.” Now Myungim not only prays, but works for children of God through the work of General Commission on Religion on Race. She was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from Methodist Theological Seminary, in Seoul, Korea, and a Master of Divinity degree from Drew University Theological School, in Madison, NJ. She has continued her study as a Doctor of Ministry candidate at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C. From July 2007, she has served Pennington United Methodist Church as the head pastor. It was a well established congregation, and she provided leadership that challenged people to grow in the likeness of Christ. From July 2002 until June 2007, she served as the pastor for Totowa United Methodist Church, Totowa, NJ. She was able to bring stability and growth with new programs and evangelism campaigns to a congregation that was shrinking in membership. From July 1999 until June 2002, she was the assistant chaplain at Centenary College, Hackettstown, NJ. There she formed a new worship service for young people complete with a praise band, and provided relevant messages. Prior to that, she served as the assistant pastor for Newton United Methodist Church in Newton, NJ. She participated in all aspects of local church ministry, concentrating on the young people of the church. Rev. Myungim Kim has been serving the United Methodist Council on the Korean Nation Plan as an Executive Board Member since August 2009. From October 2004 until July 2008, she was an Executive Board Member and Secretary of the United Methodist Development Fund in GBGM. She has been serving the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference as a member of the Board of Ordained Ministry since July 2008. She is currently the President of the National Association of Korean American United Methodist Clergy Women. |
