Special Initiatives
|
In addition to its overall denominational concerns, the General Commission on Religion and Race focuses its advocacy and education efforts on particular issues that are crucial to its quest to foster racial justice and inclusiveness in the church and in society. The commission’s staff and board of directors choose these issues based on their critical nature and connection to GCORR’s mission and goals, as well as their importance to the mission and concerns of The United Methodist Church. GCORR addresses these special concerns through official statements and resolutions, media coverage and commentaries, advocacy campaigns, proposed or supported legislation, participation in protest rallies, workshops, panel discussions and other educational events. Typically, the commission collaborates in its response with ministry partners, including other agencies, caucuses and organizations. This section provides news, views and resource information on key concerns—for example, immigration reform, the persistent use of offensive Native American sports-team names and mascots, the need for more involvement of white leaders in anti-racism efforts and the emerging issue of global racism. The concerns listed in this section may change from time to time, as new issues demand our priority attention. But always, we seek your contributions and feedback in helping us to collect and offer valuable, thought-provoking information and insights on all these issues that affect our church and our world. |
