The General Commission on Religion and Race has been engaging worship leaders from around the United Methodist Connection in discussing the racially charged events of the week, and ways United Methodists can be involved. Two United Methodist clergymen, Bishop Gregory V. Palmer and the Rev. Gilbert H. Bishop Violet Fisher, leader of the New York West Area, preached April 30, 2008, to several thousand General Conference delegates, staff and visitors on The United Methodist Church's persistent challenge to overcome racism and achieve true inclusiveness. Bishop Fisher, elected to the episcopacy in 2000, retired in 2008.
