Forty-four members from across The United Methodist Church's global connection make up the diverse Board of Directors of the General Commission on Religion and Race.

These members share a strong commitment to the agency’s mission of fostering racial/ethnic justice and inclusiveness. They are charged with carrying out the board’s governance duties: to set direction, ensure adequate resources, and provide oversight.

They are also charged with carrying forth the unifying spirit and transformational message of GCORR to all persons and entities within their churches, conferences, jurisdictions and communities at large.

Our 2009-2012 board represents all five U.S. jurisdictions of the denomination and also its international central conferences, with members coming particularly from East Africa and the Philippines. Most directors are elected by their jurisdictions, while some are selected by the Commission to achieve balance and by the Council of Bishops to provide an episcopal presence.

Board members are clergy, laity and members of all six major U.S. racial/ethnic groups: Asian American, black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander and white. They are pastors, bishops, district superintendents, annual conference staff, young and older adults, youth, students and teachers, business owners, non-profit executives, retirees, and social justice advocates.

Bishop Linda Lee, episcopal leader of the Wisconsin Area (Wisconsin Annual Conference), is our board president, serving her second quadrennium in that role. Bishop Minerva Carcaño, episcopal leader of the Phoenix Area (Desert-Southwest Annual Conference) is our vice president. Bishop Daniel Wandabula, episcopal leader of the East Africa Area (East Africa Annual Conference) also provides board leadership.

Bishop Wandabula and the Rev. Oscar Inere of The Philippines are GCORR’s first-ever central conference board members.

The full board typically meets twice a year, in the spring and fall, to enact policies, make budget and funding decisions, propose legislation to the United Methodist General Conference, and provide planning and evaluation oversight to GCORR’s work. Board members also serve on committees to provide guidance, assistance and representation, as needed, for the Commission’s various activities.

GCORR board members are uniquely positioned to become and to build up the CORR-ageous leaders needed for racial/ethnic justice and inclusiveness in the church and the world, ensuring that all are welcome to participate fully in Christ’s ministry.
