Funding
|
The General Commission on Religion and Race is funded by the faithful giving of United Methodists through the denomination’s World Service Fund. That support enables GCORR to pursue its mandated mission to help the church overcome racism and create a more inclusive denomination that calls, equips and sends forth disciples of Jesus Christ to transform the world. The General Commission is also a source of funding for jurisdictional commissions and racial/ethnic churches, caucuses and community projects through the historic Minority Group Self-Determination Fund, established by the General Conference in 1979. The need for such support is critical to their work and survival. But the need is also greater than GCORR can fulfill. That is why we created the Bishop Woodie W. White Endowment Fund for Racial Justice, so that gifts to the fund can one day aid more worthwhile projects. As we retool the Minority Group Fund and further develop the Woodie White Endowment Fund, we are seeking ways to make a more significant and sustainable impact on viable ministries of racial/ethnic justice, empowerment and reconciliation. We invite you to visit the pages for these funds to learn more and to extend your support for this important ministry through your generous gifts. Minority Group Self-Determination FundThe Minority Group Self-Determination Fund was established by The United Methodist Church for the empowerment of racial and ethnic minority people within and outside the church. Projects rather than organizations are funded. Grants are available for supporting programs initiated, developed, controlled and administered by Asian, Black, Hispanic/Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander groups. Guidelines and procedures are established by The General Commission on Religion and Race as a reference for projects seeking grants from the fund. Woodie W. White, a retired United Methodist bishop, helped pioneer the denomination’s efforts to ensure its own adherence to principles of racial justice and inclusiveness and served as the first General Secretary of the General Commission on Religion and Race. The Woodie White Endowment Fund is intended to help the commission expand its support for local programs across the nation that foster racial justice and reconciliation, economic opportunities, local church outreach programs, and solutions to social problems facing racial ethnic communities. |
