GCORR Honors Bishop Talbert, Mourns His Passing

It is with profound sorrow that we learned of the passing of Bishop Melvin G. Talbert. We extend our deepest condolences to Bishop Talbert's family, friends, and the entire United Methodist Church community during this time of grieving.

Bishop Talbert was a trailblazer in the fight for antiracism. We are reminded of the transformative impact he had on the lives of countless individuals, his community, and the church. His fearless spirit and unwavering commitment to justice were a guiding light for those who sought to build a more equitable society.

One of the defining moments in Bishop Talbert's life was his shared experiences with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the civil rights protests, spending three days and nights in jail alongside Dr. King. These experiences became a testament to his dedication to the principles of nonviolence and equality.

His tenure as the President of the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR) from 1983-1988 showcased his passion for fostering inclusivity and understanding among diverse communities.

Let us honor his memory by strengthening our work towards equity and antiracism by continuing to champion the values he held dear.

Rev. Dr. Giovanni Arroyo
General Secretary
